We recently held an entrepreneurship ideation workshop with some DPR Koreans in Shanghai. This new micro-format we are testing is meant to pilot creative legal approaches towards solving the key issues we have identified over the years that prevent the creation of an innovative startup ecosystem. On this session, we went over the need for a cheap and accessible legal construct that would allow startups to be created in DPRK.
While Trump is pitching Kim Jong Un on beachview condos in Wonsan, frontier entrepreneurs in North Korea have been launching startups in one of the world’s most challenging markets. Choson Exchange has been teaching startup skills in the DPRK for more than half a decade. Join us in Hong Kong for talk on the state of business and startup culture in the DPRK, and whether North Koreans are ready to face the global market.
Choson Exchange has been running trips like these since 2010 and we find that the mood in the country ebbs and flows in line with international events. This time, if not exactly jubilant, the atmosphere was perhaps cautiously optimistic as North Koreans also struggled to make sense of the speed of developments and where it was all heading.
What does North Korea want? Secretary Pompeo talks about economic assistance after a deal is done. North Korea disputes asking for economic aid. How does economics and business intersect with this geopolitical challenge? This is our view formed from over a decade of economic and entrepreneurship training in North Korea. But first a long story of how we got here…
In preparation for the Singapore Summit between Trump-Kim Jong Un (and Xi?) and in response to the media requests coming in, we have prepared a brief fact sheet on Choson Exchange and Singapore. We thought this media fact sheet will be helpful to journalists visiting Singapore for their first time.
President Donald Trump will meet Marshal Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12. We are looking forward to hosting a viewing party of this event on June 12 and a discussion of North Korea's economic policies and evolution over the last decade of our work prior to the date. We hope both sides manage to compromise to create a breakthrough in their relations. We also salute Moon Jae In's skillful diplomacy in creating this moment.
